Stanley River Excursion
Following last year’s camp at SREC, students in Yr 6/7 thought that canoeing this year would be a breeze. However, they had not allowed for the increase in the volume of the dam and the elements.
The canoes were put into the water at Kirkleigh and led by SERC teachers Rod Dann and Tony Briscoe, students paddled for about 50 minutes to the site of the ancient bora ring downstream. Here they were amazed to find out the aborigines had built the ring thousands of years before the pyramids were built.
The bora ring has been fenced off to protect it from cattle and has consequently become overgrown with weeds.
The path that led to the kippa ring about 600metres away is still obvious although the road through to Esk was built across it.
Although the water was rougher on the homeward journey and six of the seven canoes needed a tow, Laurie, Connor and Nathan were able to canoe all the way back to Kirkleigh
